FEATURE CLUB ARTICLE
1997 Fall issue of the WBH magazine

The members of the Ojibwa Bowhunters of Milwaukee, Inc. would like to tell you of our instinctive club's 50 year history and some of our future plans. The club was started on January 12, 1945, by a group of employees of Globe Union of Milwaukee. They named the club the Globe Archers. Membership grew to 42 members by 1946 when a 30 acre wooded pasture was leased in the town of Sussex. The club kept growing and in January 1947 the club voted to incorporate under the name of The Ojibwa Bowhunters of Milwaukee, Inc.

In 1949 we lost our lease to the Sussex range but good fortune smiled and in April 1950 we leased 25 acres on the east shore of Lake Nagawicka. This was a steep but beautiful range. It took the next two years to complete it.

Late in 1957 we were informed that the state had purchased the land and would not renew our lease, so again the search started. Lady luck smiled once again and in July of 1958 we leased 80 acres from Ray Seborn several miles east of our range. This land was adjacent to the north side on Interstate 94 and west of Highway E. It was exactly what we were looking for - rugged, hilly and heavily wooded with large oaks.

1959 saw dramatic turnover in club membership and was the beginning of a rebuilding process. The club finally realized that it was time to start saving money and look for our own land. In 1965, Jim Baker, volunteered to cook our first Spanferkle, which turned out to be a real money maker. During the next several years, the club prospered and saved to purchase its own land. Late in 1967, Applied Power purchased the Seborn property and we again lost our lease. Jim Baker ran an ad in the Milwaukee Journal for land and Mr. George Schoewe of New Berlin answered it. We purchased the 38 acres he had for sale. On September 3, 1967 we moved to that land which is still our present location.

Our ranges encompass a beautiful wooded low land area with many big trees and wildlife habitat. We have a 112 target field range divided into two fourteen's. Each station has four shooting stakes and two bales with animal targets and a large ground bunker with two life size McKenzie targets. OUr 14 target broadhead range consists of large ground bunkers with two shooting positions at each station and four elevated platforms. All shooting distances are unmarked. We have a clubhouse with a kitchen, tiled rest rooms and a walk-in cooler. The bar is covered open air pavilion. We have a beautiful camping area with 48 sites, each with electric hook-up.

                                   The Clubhouse

Ojibwa has always supported and participated in archery education by holding archery clinics at Indian Mound Boy Scout Camp and shooting demonstrations at many Cub Scout Blue and Gold Dinners and Church Sports Nights. We always welcome scouts on our range to camp and learn more about archery. Ojibwa is a contributor to the New Berlin Scholarship program. OUr membership support the Wisconsin Bowhunters Association and we are a 101% club.

Our 68 family and single memberships includes many cadets and juniors. Our club meetings are held on the 4th Tuesday of each month and our Board meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month. We hold outdoor club tournaments on the first Sunday of each month starting in April and continuing through August. The Instinctor is published once each month. Our club prides itself on its friendliness and sociability.

Our summer schedule is filled with many events. In April we host a Traditional Archery Shoot. Also in April starts our ten week Wednesday evening 3D League. During the summer we have an Open House and free shoot. In July we host our famous Spanferkle, were we roast up to 6 200 pound pigs stuffed with chickens. They roast for 24 hours and are served with stuffing, sauerkraut, applesauce and rye bread. What a feast! In addition, we also have a two day 3D, Broadhead and Combo Shoot, which includes a raffle for a Trip for Two to las Vegas as First Prize. Also in July begins our ten week Wednesday evening Broadhead League. In August we have our Annual Family Picnic. This year we will be celebrating our 54th. Anniversary.

The future holds many exciting prospects for Ojibwa. We are planning to enlarge our clubhouse with a 68' X 140' addition. This will afford us an indoor range.

We are located at 3045 S. Johnson Road in New Berlin Wisconsin. Hope we can give you a tour of our beautiful range soon. We would enjoy your visit very much.

1998 the club had a bylaws change that now allows sight shooters. There is separate awards given for archers shooting instinctive or with sights.

Bylaws voted on October 24, 2006 to increase single dues to$100.00;  family dues to $125.00; and initiation fee to $50.00
